But contained within are both a profound philosophy of life and an effective self-defense. According to the official state development discourse, local Hmong's traditional ethnic culture is associated with both poverty and the solution to poverty. This ethnographic research looks at local Hmong women and their handicraft practice in the context of tourism to illustrate how local people react to this dilemma, and how ethnic minorities and rural residents are being drawn into the widening orbit of contemporary China’s economic growth in the process of accommodation, competition, and resistance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Xianghong Feng, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Anthropology at EMU, is a cultural and applied anthropologist. She received her doctoral degree in anthropology at Washington State University, and her master’s degree in folklore and bachelor’s degree in journalism from Central University for Nationalities (now Minzu University of China) in Beijing, China. She worked as a journalist for national newspapers and a magazine in Beijing, China, before she came to the U.S. for doctoral training in anthropology. This was reported to be the first election of its type for a class monitor held in a school in China, as well as an interesting use of classic democratic voting principles and interpersonal dynamics. It gives a glimpse into China's contemporary urban middle classes. It won the Sterling Feature Award at &lt;span id="SPELLING_ERROR_51" class="blsp-spelling-error"&gt;Silverdocs&lt;/span&gt; in 2007. In November 2007, &lt;em&gt;Please Vote for Me&lt;/em&gt; was named by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as one of the 15 films on it documentary feature Oscar shortlist. The list was narrowed to five films on January 22, 2008, but &lt;em&gt;Please Vote for Me&lt;/em&gt; did not make it to the final five.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;span style="color:#ffcc33;"&gt;The film is part of the "Why Democracy?" series.
